Language course and holiday fun

Every year at the Lyceum Alpinum, we come up with something exciting and kid-friendly for our youngest participants.

What the kids can expect:

Mornings – language courses

Here on the children’s holiday camp, we learn a language not according to a strict curriculum or with standardised worksheets. Our exercises are primarily intended to introduce the topic in a fun way and are always carefully selected for each individual. Vocabulary and grammar are always level-specific and thus much easier to memorise. Our experienced teaching and childcare staff lead the language courses and take care of your child during the entire time of the camp.

Afternoon – holiday offers

After lunch, we all do something together as a community – and every day, this is something new and different, but always exciting. For example, the following activities could take place on our holiday camp for ages 6 to 9:

  • Forest experience
  • Painting
  • Board games
  • Climbing indoor
  • River rafting
  • Handcrafts
  • Sports on campus
  • Tour of Zuoz
  • Visit playground
  • Visit Rega in Samedan
  • Bouncy castle in Samedan
  • Bowling
  • Minigolf
  • A visit to the National Park

Childcare during the holidays

Our camp counsellors and teaching staff are very well trained to help your child. Each participant is placed in a suitable group for language instruction in English, French or German according to their level of proficiency. The afternoon activities are, of course, dependent on the weather conditions. Childcare takes place with us just like with real families. The camp counsellors are contact persons for everything concerning the children and are there to help them around the clock. Overnight stays here at the boarding school are not included, but the children are brought back to their families.

Sports & Entertainment Programme
This is my first year as one of the staff of the Junior Day Camp. I was in charge of helping create the daily programmes, acting as a liaison between parents and the camp, supervising the campers during lunch and afternoon activities. I love working with the youngest members of the Summer Camp and watching them make new friends and improve their English together. The language barriers were sometimes difficult to overcome, but that was also an opportunity to engage the rest of the children who could help translate. The relationships that were formed between the supervisors and the children throughout the two or three weeks the children participated have left the most remarkable and unforgettable impression.

This is my sixth year and eleventh Summer Camp. For me, every camp has such great energy, and it's incredibly rewarding to see children/students developing their language skills and confidence in such a short period of time. The students are an extremely diverse community of learners which means drawing on all my teaching and life experience to deliver classes which are fun, inclusive and communicative. This year on the first Junior Day Programme, I developed classes which drew on the wonderful location for inspiration. I was the senior teacher and supported a new team member. I led and assisted the afternoon activities, including an arts and craft project. My favourite memory of the first Junior Day Programme was two classes coming together to do a very lively and interactive performance of 'We're Going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen.

Language course

Learn English, French or German for juniors

Yes, language learning CAN be fun! Without a doubt, the best way to learn a language is to hear and speak it daily. Don’t worry, here in the Junior Day Camp classes, you can learn or extend your grammar, increase your vocabulary and, most importantly, develop self-confidence, all in a non-threatening and extremely motivating environment.

Language courses with an educational concept

Our language classes are small, and our enthusiastic team of teachers will choose topics relevant and of interest and linguistic value to the children. Here in Zuoz, we learn languages the Junior Camp way – by listening and practising them daily. The courses for English, German or French lessons always take place in the morning from 08:30 to 11:45. All language levels are welcome and will be encouraged appropriately. Even if you have no previous knowledge, you are in good hands here at the camp.

English, French or German around the clock

Between 11:45 and 16:00, the new foreign language is also spoken during lunch and activities, thus ensuring that practice is continuous – even if you don’t realise it. When your child talks to you in English over the dinner table says, you will appreciate how fast language learning can be!

Friends from everywhere

England, Malta, Ireland, Italy, France, Canada, China – culture is important to us and participants come to us from all over the world. A common language is needed to communicate outside the language courses. Our International Spirit is also an excellent motivator for children to learn languages well. The children who come to us are enthusiastic about the full range of free-time activities on offer and quickly make new friends – including kids from different cultures.

When I was at Junior Day Camp, I always had breakfast with mom and dad in the morning first. Then I was picked up by a bus and taken to the campus. English was really funny because there was also a girl from Malta, and we played an English game together. Then there was lunch, and you could look at the mountains all the time. In the afternoon we went for a hike and then had a picnic outside. We had apples, orange juice, cake and sandwiches. Afterwards, the bus brought us back to our families. But Leah, that was the name of the girl came to play with us later.

The fact that Switzerland is becoming increasingly popular as a travel destination is of course mainly due to the wonderful natural landscape and clean air out here, away from the hustle and bustle. Escape the hectic pace of everyday life and break out of the grey and noisy city. Above all, children love our holiday camps, because of the many exciting activities at the Lyceum Alpinum that any child would want to experience at least once.
