Swiss Matura
The strength of our educational approach lies in the diploma’s concentration on a variety of specialisations. Our students are prepared for this diploma through either a 6-year or 4-year programme. On passing the Matura exam and Matura thesis, students can gain acceptance to study at the best universities in Switzerland, such as in Zurich or Berne, as well as throughout Europe and internationally.
Choose from a range of options
The Swiss Matura can be completed either in German only, or bilingually with English or Italian “Maturità Bilingue Grigionese” (Italian must be the student’s native language).
The diploma includes both the Matura thesis and exam.
The Matura exams are conducted on site by Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz teachers. According to the Swiss Federal Matura authorities (MAR), the supervisory function lies with the Canton of Graubünden.
Matura
Each course in this programme is taught in German, except for foreign languages and some elective subjects. The Matura is the standard diploma in Switzerland and is mainly chosen by students from German-speaking countries. However, non-native speakers are also increasingly opting for this Swiss degree, as it is recognised and acclaimed by universities around the world.
Our combination options:
The range of major and minor subjects for the last two school years makes this diploma customisable, which is ideal for those who know the career they want to pursue later.
Art & Design, Biology & Chemistry, Physics & Applied Mathematics, Spanish as well as Business & Law are the so-called major (core) subjects.
Minor (supplementary) subjects include Chemistry, Economics & Law (taught in English), Geography, History (taught in English) and Information and Communications Technology.

This is what our students Estelle and Valentina say about the Matura at the Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz.
Bilingual Matura G/E
Students at the Lyceum Alpinum have the opportunity to choose the bilingual (German/English) Matura programme in their last three years of school. In this programme, various major and minor subjects are taught exclusively in English.
Subjects in English
- Biology, 4th – 6th grade, 2 lessons per week
- History, 4th – 6th grade, 2 lessons per week
- Geography, 4th – 5th grade, 2 or 3 lessons per week
For minor subjects, students choose between Economics & Law, History or ICT, 5th & 6th grade, 3 lessons per week
Language stay:
In 3rd grade, students experience a language stay of at least three weeks in an English-speaking region. The language stay serves to deepen their English language skills through immersive contact with native speakers. It takes place either during May or summer holidays. Students are exempt from school for one week after May holidays. However, proof of at least 60 lessons in English is a requirement.
Further information can also be found in the regulations for Bilingual Swiss Matura. Otherwise, education regulations for the Swiss Matura apply.
Admission to this programme is based on the performance level at the end of third grade. The following educational conditions must be met:
Maturità Bilingua Grigionese I/G
Since the school year 2015/16, students whose native language is Italian can graduate with the Swiss Matura in Italian and German. On successful completion, the “Maturità Bilingua Grigionese” is then added to the Swiss Matura diploma certificate. Italiano and Storia courses are taught in the first language from 3rd to 6th grade.
Our institute values internationalism, and a multilingual education further unites a diversity of students.
